On Saturday, March 26, 2011, the Board of Directors of the Adirondack Mountain Club approved the petition to form a Northville-Placid Trail Chapter of ADK. Thank you to everyone who signed the petition and supported our effort to form a separate chapter of ADK devoted to the Northville-Placid Trail.
Forming a separate NPTrail Chapter of ADK made sense for the following reasons:
First, it results in a direct focus on the NPT. People who have an interest in the NPT will be able to identify themselves by joining and coming together
as a group to help protect and maintain the trail.
Second, it results in being able to raise funds that can be
specifically used to protect and maintain the trail. A portion of the
ADK dues stays with the chapter for its use. Also, having a chapter with a
501(c)(3) designation as a part of ADK allows for tax-deductible
donations for general operations and use or for specific projects such
as replacing or repairing bridges, lean-tos or privies as well as the ability to apply for and obtain grants for trail projects.
Third, it can sponsor special events during the year for
enjoyment of the trail as well as for work parties. We plan on having two NPTrail Chapter events each year - one in the Spring and another in the Fall. The Fall outing will be the official annual meeting for the Chapter. The meetings will include an educational component, trail work and a celebration.
Here is the Vision and Mission which will guide the NPTrail Chapter:
Introduction
We are a group of individuals who have a special place in our hearts and souls for the NPT, Northville Placid Trail. This is a trail that instills a feeling of remoteness and spiritual renewal. It is a trail with unlimited scenic vistas and historical significance. We believe that the Northville Placid Trail is a “premier” back-country trail and destination and our overwhelming desire and passion is to continue to protect, preserve and promote the NPT as such. To us, “premier” means a trail that is well marked, with well maintained facilities (lean-tos, tent sites, bridges and privies); a trail that is constantly monitored and maintained for responsible use and recreation as a foot path used solely for activities such as hiking, backpacking, snow-shoeing and x-country skiing; a trail that provides for a strenuous yet enjoyable journey and experience in a back-country “wilderness” setting.
To Protect, Preserve & Promote the Northville Placid Trail
as a premier foot path for such activities as hiking, backpacking, snow-shoeing & x-country skiing and as a unique back-country wilderness recreation destination and experience.
- NPTrail Chapter Mission -
To Fulfill the NPTrail Chapter Vision by:
Protecting the Northville Placid Trail as guardians
through monitoring NPT conditions; advocating for and aiding in timely maintenance and enhancement of the NPT to highest trail standards and making sure the NPT retains its sole and only use as a foot path. Preserving all aspects of the Northville Placid Trail and its environs
through diligent trail stewardship and vigilance with emphasis on the NPT’s remote wilderness back-country character, ecology, scenic vistas and historical significance. Promoting the wise and responsible use of the Northville Placid Trail
through education so that current and future generations can partake of the NPT’s unique recreational opportunities and potential for spiritual renewal and fellowship.
And, in so doing, the Northville Placid Trail Chapter of ADK will work in cooperation with all individuals and groups who share our vision and who have an interest in the Northville Placid Trail such as the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) and its many chapters, committees and members and the Adirondack Park Agency (APA). Chapter Chair - Tom Wemett:The person who oversees the establishment of the chapter and operations of same. This is the leader, the visionary, the one who keeps people inspired and focused on the objectives of the organization.
Chapter Vice Chair - Paul Weinstein:The person who would assist the Chapter Chair with managing the Chapter as well as handling Membership initially. It is also possible, but not mandatory, that the Vice Chair is in line to take over the Chair position when the Chair steps down.
Treasurer - Genny Morley:The person who maintains the books of the chapter, deposit monies, Chairs the Finance committee, and interfaces with the Chapter's and ADK's accountants. ADK dues are paid directly to ADK but ADK cuts a check back to the chapter each month for their share (30%) of membership dues. For those members who already have a primary Chapter affiliation, the NPTrail Chapter would offer an affiliate membership for $25 per year. The chapter maintains its own bank accounts. The Treasurer and the Finance committee would also be involved in other fund-raising activities as well as providing guidance on how the Chapter manages and spends its funds.
ADK BOD Representative - Tom Wemett: Each Chapter has one representative who sits on the ADK Board of Directors.
Outings Committee - Chair - Dan Nicponski:Our thought is to have two face-to-face meetings a year, one in the spring/early summer and the other in the late summer/early fall. These would be combination work weekends and chapter official meetings. The Outings Committee would be responsible to oversee the planning and operations for these two events along with other potential events the committee might consider doing. This Committee would need a Committee Chair or Co-Chairs.
Trails Committee - Chair - Brendan Wiltse:Our thought here is for this committee to review trail maintenance needs, set priorities of work to be done, work with ADK Trails Staff and DEC staff to determine the scope of the work, materials and labor requirements, develop a plan for the work to be done, in conjunction with ADK Trails Staff and DEC staff, coordinate with ADK Trails Staff, DEC staff, and volunteers setting up a work schedule to complete the work. This Committee would need a Committee Chair or Co-Chairs.
Finance Committee - Chair - Genny Morley:This Committee would assist the Treasurer with their duties as noted above under the Treasurer's position. It is also possible that someone from this Committee would be designed Assistant Treasurer to fill in when the Treasurer isn't able to. The Treasurer would be the Committee Chair of this Committee. This committee also will work on membership expansion and fund raising.
Other officers and committee and committee chairs would be added as needed, required or deemed advisable as the Chapter continues to grow. Help us out. Join a committee today.
Please Note: All membership dues that the Northville-Placid Trail Chapter currently receives will be used solely to fund trail maintenance on the NPTrail. Other operating expenses will be funded currently by donations or contributions from individuals and businesses.
